Tangerine dream tangram1/24/2024 ![]() Bach, to me, is a musical universe on his own. What is it that you love so much about him? And: Have Bach or his compositon techniques been mirrored in your pieces in any way? To me, that was the beginning of a completely new style.īoth you and your former band collegue Edgar Froese share a passion for Johann Sebastian Bach. Thereby, the acoustic listening experience in theatre entered a different dimension. Wilson would use continous music and atmpospheres for each and every scene, thus reducing the relative importance of the actors’ texts. Robert Wilson staged his “Death, Destruction and Detroit” at the Schaubühne in 1978, where I was working as a recording engineer at the time. I vividly and personally experienced the changes in different styles of theatre productions, which took the art from the “director’s theatre” to a more visual modern approach, in Berlin. ![]() Has the situation of modern theatre improved since then in your opinion?Ībsolutely. It is this very acoustic diversity which makes the radio play so interesting to me.īefore you joined Tangerine Dream, you were writing music for theatre productions but felt there was “not enough music” to be found there. There are no borders or rules – everything is “permitted”, whether we are talking about the dialogues of the actors or the music. Thanks to the radio as a medium and to CDs, I am able to spark fantasies and scenarios, which can only be communicated through listening. Now I am able to produce these plays myself within my own studio, I would like to convey the same feelings I experienced as a child to the listener. ![]() What attracts you to this genre?Īs a little kid, I used to spend each Sunday in front of the radio, listening to the fairy tale radio plays for children with a sense of excitment. Of latetely, you have been actively engaged in radio play-productions. With Tangerine Dream, I was able to both professionally produce music and to compose for a living. I learned to play the piano at an early age, then turned to playing the church organ and went on to study music. Music has always been a part of my life and will remain so. Together with Andreas Hedler, my webmaster, I am working on the cover design of my new CD “INSTANT CITY”, which we’ll release in August of this year. And to all Tangerine Dream fans: He is not ruling out a reunion! In our interview, which was conducted shortly before the release, we talk about a Tangerine Dream concert in 1980 as the perfect live moment, the improvements in theatre productions over the last years as well as music in saturated societies. With the arrival of "Instant City", an eclectic, energetic and emphatic effort, the wait is finally over - and should reawaken interest in his oeuvre. At the turn of the centuries, things became quieter around Schmoelling, with only three genuinely new albums in over fifteen years. He left the band in 1985 and began a solo career, which kickstarted with a bang: "Wuivend Riet" was an instant classic and one of the few mid-80s electronic albums, which have stood the test of time. Despite their mutual love for Bach, Tangerine Dream founder Edgar Froese, who had his roots in Blues and Schmoelling, with his Classical education, were obviously very different characters. While the finished results were almost always stimulating, the difficulties of working within a tight, compromise-based unit were however hard for a man, who had come to appreciate solitude in his former work as a church organist and a recording engineer at various theatres in his hometown Berlin. Schmoelling's input were a sense for clear structures, catchy melodies and a more overt emotionality, which brought them recognition with audiences outside of their established fan base. ![]() To many, "Tangram", "Logos" and especially "White Eagle" remain the quintessential Tangerine Dream albums - they certainly mark the last breaths of the epic space-phase of the band and its years with record major Virgin. He was only part of the Tangerine Dream line-up for five years, but his contribution to that band's legacy still stands as proud as ever. ![]()
